Sushi Minto Take-Away/Delivery & Brunch

"Salmon Lovers" bento box

I just recently discovered Doha-Delivery.com. This website is great with full menus available.  There is only one Japanese restaurant listed, Sushi Minto. I just did pick up since I wasn't sure if they'd be able to find my apartment building. I called in the order and they said it would be ready in 10 minutes! Wow! When I got there, it was ready and easy. The quality was good, just like in the restaurant and this might become my new solution for last minute sushi cravings...

Sushi Minto brunch for 109 QR
We also went to try their brunch for 109 QR per person. They had a decent selection of Asian style cuisine and even some fish & chips. I just stuck to the tempura and sushi. The tempura was decent, but they didn't have shrimp tempura or potato tempura. The sushi was great and I could eat all the salmon I wanted. There was even mango, kiwi, melon, and watermelon nigiri sushi! It wasn't bad actually...

We tried two of their smoothies: date & banana and mixed berry. The date & banana one was really good.

car wash

Due to all the rain, my car was quite dirty.  So, I got the car washed at the Autowash at Waqod Petrol Station for 30 QR.  A friend told me it is possible to get a 300-500 QR ticket for a dirty car...

After the rain in the city center of Doha

Several days of rain and even quite a bit of thunder and lighting, which is very unusual for Qatar, left puddles of evidence around the city.

The center of Doha is also busy with construction of Dohaland ‘Musheireb’, a 35-hectare site which will transform the architectural centre of the capital city, recreating a way of living that is rooted in Qatari culture.

Megu at the Pearl

Megu, a new Japanese restaurant, just opened up at the Pearl a few days ago.  Of course I had to try it.  There are a few locations around the world, including in New York.

Sitting outside in the cool air was wonderful with views of the Pearl harbor.  After reading through each item on the menu, we started off with 35 QR fresh orange mojitos.  Then, for an appetizer, we got agedashi tofu.  The 58 QR agedashi tofu was good but kinda slimy compared to when I've had it before.  They poured the sauce right at the table.

Next we had some vegetable fried rice.   They transferred it from the black pot to the while bowl at the table.  This was also quite good and only 35 QR.

Most of the items on the menu involve kobe beef (神戸ビーフ), cuts of beef from the black Tajima-ushi breed of Wagyu cattle, raised according to strict tradition in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan and generally considered to be a delicacy, renowned for its flavour, tenderness, and fatty, well-marbled texture.  I never had it in Japan so I figured why not.  I got the 160 QR fillet tasting.  It was really good, just so little of it!  It came out still cooking on the stone.  We ended the meal with a 65 QR crunchy salmon avocado roll.  It was okay but the salmon could have been fresher.  Megu was good and the atmosphere with the view was really great but the prices are just so high.  Each 1 piece of salmon nigiri was 25 QR.  Why get 5 pieces of nigiri here when you could get all-you-can-eat salmon nigiri for 130 QR at Oishi Sushi...  Many of the chefs are Japanese and I spoke with the sushi chef at the sushi bar.  He's Japanese and from the New York location.

Al Salihiya Tea Stall & Restaurant or "Taxi Hotel"

Another local spot, Al Salihiya Tea Stall & Restaurant, known as "Taxi Hotel" by locals, has chicken and cheese sandwiches made with fresh Indian bread.  Many don't go inside the restaurant but instead park outside and order from the car.  A friend explained this is the tradition for this restaurant.

The 3 QR sandwiches are a perfect little size making it easy to eat a few which is great since the taste is so good you will want at least more than one!
